Atheism

Douglas Adams (1952-2001), British radio dramatist; author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series.  Said the idea came to him while he lay drunk in a field in Australia, gazing at the stars.  He was carrying a book called The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Europe.  Previous occupations included chicken-shed cleaner, bodyguard for an Arab royal family, and guitarist for Pink Floyd.  Was six feet tall at age 12.  A giant among free-thinkers.  Professed “radical atheist”.

“There is a theory that states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable… There is another theory that states that this has already happened.”

The above was taken from The Quotable Atheist : Ammunition for Non-Believers, Political Junkies, Gadflies, and Those Generally Hell-Bound by Jack Huberman (Nation Books 2007 – Amazon Link: Yes)

I first read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy when I was in the 8th grade and  I must confess, I didn’t really understand it at the time and I’ve never gone back to read it again as an adult.  I did see the movie that was released a few years back and found it to be mildly entertaining.  It had Zooey Deschanel it in, who doesn’t like Zooey Deschanel? and now that I know that Douglas Adams was an atheist, I think it’s time to go back and read it again.

Thoughts on The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy?
