Domain Hacks

A while back I started using Su.pr has my URL shortening tool of goodness and I recently configured my domain to host short-url’s using the Su.pr technology.  I did, however, run into a small glitch so I thought I would post a little how-to for those looking to add this function to their sites.

What you will need to do this:

  1. FTP & Shell access to your domain
  2. Text / code editor (Dreamwaver, Notepad, vi)
  3. A Su.pr / StumbleUpon Account
  4. 10 Minutes of your valuable time

The first thing you need to do is go to Su.pr and created an account.  If you have a StumbleUpon account, that will work too.

Log into your Su.pr account and look over on the right-hand side of the page where it says “Short URLs on your domain”, click on the “learn more” link.  Now you will need to download the “supr.zip” file to your machine, unpack the PHP file and edit it as shown.  Next upload the supr.php file to the root of your website.  Next you’ll need to log into your shell account and edit your .htaccess file as shown in the instructions on Su.pr.  After you’ve done all that you need to go back to Su.pr to add your domain to the list of sites to monitor.  Click on “Settings” at the top and scroll down to where it says “Promoted Sites”.  Add your domain to the list and then click “Save Settings” at the bottom of the page.

Important note:  If the pages refreshes and your domain is not listed in the domains area, you will need to go to stumbleupon.com and add your site to StumbleUpon so that your domain shows up in their their database.  After you’ve submitted your domain to StumbleUpon, go back to Su.pr and add your domain under “Settings” again.  I haven’t found this error documented anywhere and it took me a while to figure it out because no error messages are given.  Looking through the support boards it appears that others have had the same issue as well.

You’ll want to go back to Su.pr and drag the Browser Bookmarklet to your bookmark bar in your browser so that you can shrink your URLs on the fly or you can go back to Su.pr and do it there.  There’s also a WordPress plugin you can install that will shrink your URLs and post them to Facebook and Twitter when you publish a new post.

Good luck and have fun shortening URLs on your domain with Su.pr.

  • Hey Chris

    Thanks for the article.

The supr.zip file is no longer on SU's website - any chance you could email me a copy or upload to a filesharing site so I can grab it?
  • That's odd... You'd think they'd fix a broken page like that right away. I don't have the zip file on my HD, but all that is inside is supr.php. I could email you a copy of mine I suppose. Hit me up at me@chrispugh.com
